Mary Ann Walker was the daughter of a British locksmith and his wife, Caroline. At the time of her birth on Aug. 26, 1845, there was no indication that she would meet the end that she did 43 years later. Her father made a decent living for the family, and she grew up thinking she would marry and live a life free of many of the cares of this world, but this was not to be. By the time she was 40, she hit rock-bottom and lived on the dole in a London poorhouse. However, if riches in this life eluded Mary, at least her death gave her fame. | Full Story
