Madera County Sheriff warns of wire scam
Staff Report
If you ever get a call from someone posing as a relative and claiming to be in jail, do what one mountain senior citizen did.
She finally called her grandchild's cell instead.
Had it not been for a failed money transfer, a 71-year-old Coarsegold woman could have been out as much as $2,500 in cash.
She said she received a call from a man claiming to be her grandson.
He said his voice didn't sound familiar because of a broken nose he suffered in a wreck.
He claimed that he'd been arrested after attending a wedding reception in Bolivia.
He needed Grandma to wire money to finance his release from jail.
Believing his story at first, she actually tried to make the transfer but it failed.
When the caller called again, she decided to call her grandson's cell to find out what was going on.
When the call went through, she learned that he was never in Bolivia and had never called for cash.
Madera County Sheriff John Anderson is issuing yet another warning about the scam.
Never wire money, no matter how good the story may sound. Instead, he says, phone family first.
