CUHS decathlon up to challenge Team takes second place in Madera County contest

Chowchilla Union High School competed against seven other high schools at the 30th annual Madera County Academic Decathlon on Feb. 4.
Yosemite High School won the 2012 Academic Decathlon for the 19th consecutive year.
The Academic Decathlon team from Yosemite High School will compete in the California Academic Decathlon State Finals on March 15-18, in Sacramento.
Yosemite High School scored 32,728.4 points out of 60,000 and will challenge the best schools from throughout California. The nine-member team, comprised of three "A", three "B" and three "C" students, won the Madera County Decathlon after competing against seven county high schools.
Chowchilla High School placed second, with Chawanakee Academy coming in third in the competition. Other competing schools included Glacier High Charter, Liberty High, Madera High, Madera South High and Pioneer Technical Center.
Chawanakee Academy won the Super Quiz relay held in front of community members, donors, educators, parents and volunteers. First-place rosette ribbons were awarded to the team members.
This year, each student participated in 10 challenging events, including tests in art, economics, language and literature, mathematics, music, science and social science.
In addition, the contestants performed a prepared and impromptu speech, wrote essays on a given topic and were interviewed by a panel of judges.
The 2012 Academic Decathlon topic was "The Age of Empire" and the Super Quiz topic was "Imperialism."
The Chowchilla High team members, led by coaches Kim Kutzner and Libby Cross include: Honors Division Elizabeth Kutzner, Alejandra Segovia; Scholastic Division Laura Cross, Sukhi Mehat, Shawn Williams; Varsity Division Seth Anderson, Eduardo Hernandez, Sabrina Pineda. Alternates included Will Delmas, Cecilia Guevara, Victoria Zapiem and Kyle Hansen.
The top scoring senior from each school will receive a $100 scholarship. The following students earned the senior honors:

Jennifer Garner from Yosemite High School was the top scoring decathlete, scoring 7,099.5 points out of 10,000, making her the highest-scoring decathlete in Madera County's history. Garner scored a perfect score of 1,000 on the essay test.
Students received gold, silver and bronze medals for each academic event. The following students received medals in the following categories:
