Central Valley Writers' Workshop will offer a class on self-editing on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 11:30 a.m. in the Chowchilla library.

Published author Glenna Jarvis will offer writers tips and techniques to address elements such as pacing, hooks, clear point of view, story goal and scene goals, scenes and sequels and how to enhance the overall story.

"Whether you're writing short stories or novels, these elements should apply to all writing," Jarvis said.

Jarvis has taught numerous classes on various aspects of writing, including characterization, scene and sequel structure, and pulling ideas from headlines. She is a former student of writing legend Jack Bickham, the Central Valley's own mystery author Bonnie Hearn Hill and teacher and cozy mystery writer Kat Goldring.

The CVWW holds weekly critique sessions where writers read up to 20 minutes of their own work for feedback from fellow writers. Visitors are encouraged to view the process up to two times a year before becoming a member, and dues are $25 a year. Dues are half price through the remainder of the CVWW fiscal year, which ends in September.

"If you've ever wanted to write, if you've been writing and want to improve your work, the Central Valley Writers' Workshop is there to help," Jarvis said. "The writing industry is very competitive. We at the Workshop want to see each other succeed, and devote ourselves to helping others and helping ourselves. We are constantly learning and growing as writers. Each member, regardless of where they are on the writing path, is a valuable contribution."The self-editing class — as are all seminars — is free to CVWW members, and cost $20 for non-members, a portion of which helps support the Friends of the Library.

The Central Valley Writers' Workshop is open to all writers at least 18. All genres are welcome. For more information about the workshop or the classes, contact Glenna Jarvis, (559) 665-7381.
