Staff Report

Moses Hughlin "Curly" Hubbard celebrated his 100th birthday with friends at Coffee Cats in Chowchilla Sunday, Feb. 5.

Hubbard was born in Valley Springs, Ark. He graduated from high school in 1931. Hubbard was active in basketball. His junior year his team won the Arkansas state championship game.

Hubbard acquired his nickname while working at a cotton labor camp. He was standing outside waiting for dinner to be served and a truck load of men pulled up and one of them started walking toward him, calling him "Curly." As he got closer he realized that he had the wrong man, but from that time on, everyone called him Curly. The name has stayed with him to this day.

He moved to Chowchilla in 1934, and worked at Anderson Clayton Co. for 40 years, from 1937 to 1977, and continued to farm, living at his present location for the past 62 years.

Hubbard and his wife, Anna Pearl, married in 1936. She died in 2005 at the age of 93. They have three children, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Hubbard enjoys his garden. Every day he makes sure he spends a few hours hoeing and nurturing his crops, especially the tomatoes.
