As the winter season of sport winds down, three varsity Chowchilla Union High School teams are preparing for CIF Central Section playoff runs, and two of the teams still have excellent shots at winning a North Sequoia League championship. Boys soccer, coached by Martin Gomez, enters their final week of league play in second place with a 7-1 NSL record and a rematch with first-place Kerman this Thursday at Henry Massaro Stadium in their league finale. With an overall record of 20-4-2, the CUHS boys soccer team expects to receive a very high playoff seeding. Soccer playoffs begin on Tuesday, Feb. 14, and we should host a first-round match that day in Chowchilla, or have a bye that day and host a match Thursday, Feb. 16. Either way, our boys have had an outstanding year, so come out and support them for their final NSL contest with Kerman and/or their playoff run. Good luck to Coach Gomez and all their players.

Head coach Don "Bub" Smith's girls varsity basketball team enters this week in third place at 4-2 behind Yosemite and Sierra (both 5-1) in the NSL and 13-6 overall. The girls travel to Washington Union today and host Kerman on Friday this week, and finish NSL play next week by hosting Yosemite on Wednesday and traveling to Sierra on Friday, Feb. 17, to finish the season. Girls basketball playoffs begin Wednesday, Feb. 22, and continue Friday, Feb. 24, with seedings announced Saturday, Feb. 18. We have an excellent chance to host a first-round game so please stand by for that announcement.

The varsity boys basketball team, under the direction of head coach Fred Gaines, enters their final two weeks of play tied for first place with Sierra High School at 5-1, with a 15-3 overall record. The boys also travel to Washington Union on Tuesday and host Kerman on Friday this week, and finish NSL play next week by hosting Yosemite on Tuesday and traveling to Sierra on Friday, Feb. 17, to finish their season. Boys basketball playoffs begin Tuesday, Feb. 21, and continue Thursday, Feb. 23. We should host a first-round game in Chowchilla and/or receive a bye and then host a second-round game. Seedings for the boys will also be announced on Saturday, Feb. 18, so please stand by for playoff game times and dates.

Both the varsity girls and boys basketball teams will honor this years' seniors on Friday, Feb. 10, after the conclusion of both JV contests, as these festivities should begin around 6:30. Please stop by for an opportunity to see this event and watch four basketball games in a single evening.

Athletic Foundation News and Notes: A reminder that the Chowchilla Athletic Foundation Hall of Fame Dinner is Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Portuguese Hall on 3rd Street in Chowchilla. This year's inductees are CAF founder and 10-year president Alex Pittz; recently retired teacher, coach and administrator Mike Little; and community philanthropist Henry Massaro. Tickets are $45 each and available from any high school coach, CAF board member or from me.
