One hundred and twenty-two students walked across the Le Grand Union High School stage and received their high school diplomas on Thursday, June 10.
The cool-breezy evening started promptly at 8 p.m. with the graduated proceeding in to Pomp and Circumstance by Elgar.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Juan Jose Avelar-Mendoza followed by parent Amanda Chavez singing the National Anthem beautifully.
Graduate Jacob Martin Marchini said the invocation with graduate Debora Yanez-Barcelo repeating it in Spanish.
First year principal Javier Martinez welcome parents, family members, friends, students and graduates to the 100th graduating ceremony.
He also welcomed the Board of Trustees, Superintendent Donna Alley, teachers of the Le Grand High School and district and "last but not definitely least, the 100th graduating class; the Class of 2010."
On the behalf of the graduating class, he thanked their advisors, a group of teacher who assisted the class for the past four years with fund raising, trips, prom and supervision of activities. The class stood to applaud those who helped them through the years.
Mr. Martinez mentioned three special people that the class wanted to recognize who unfortunately would not be at the school next year. Mr. Kyle Chew, Mr. Rob Davey and Mr. Brian Kubo received a applause from the students and guest.
"This evening the class also wished to recognize someone who has been in the district for 35 years," stated Mr. Martinez, "She is part of Le Grand High and her retirement will certainly leave an empty space in our hearts. Mrs. Sandy Richard, thank you for all you have done."
Mr. Martinez spoke directly to the class stating, "Tonight you conclude another chapter in your life. After so many minutes, hours, days and years of hard work; you finally made it. And for that I congratulate you. But also please realize this is the beginning of yet another and perhaps more challenging chapter of this book entitle Life. Some of you have chosen to go straight to college, some of you will be joining the armed forces and protect our Country, and some of you will go straight to work."
"Although it is sad to say, it is a harsh reality, after today, many of your will not see each other for quite some time. But I guarantee that as the years go by and you grow older, you will wonder about your classmates whereabouts. Therefore I'd like for you to take a good look around. I want you to remember this moment. Remember your friends, teachers and your family whom have gathered to celebrate your achievements. I want you to enjoy and treasure this and all of the memories you have built upon this 100 year old place."
"By all means, go out and explore new horizons, meet new people, better yourselves, but please never forget where you came from. We certainly will never forget you. And when times get tough just remember you can lean upon our shoulders. As you Alma Mater, we will always be here for you.
So this is goodbye, class of 2010. We'll miss you. One way or another, you've had quite an impact on this place. And you'll leave quite a gap here. But we won't have any shortage of memories. We'll remember you for being enthusiastic. We'll remember you for being friendly. And if we're honest, we'll also remember you for waiting until the last minute to complete work, but most of all, we'll remember you for being great to have around.
Mr. Martinez concluded with, "Thank you for having been a part of this chapter in my life."
Graduates Veronica Moreno and Magdalena Perez were this year's Salutatorians for the class. Moreno spoke first followed by Perez.
The Le Grand Valedictorian was Magdalena Perez.
Le Grand had two Salutatorians, Veronica Moreno and Samantha Valladao.
The graduating class was excited to hear from the Keynote Speaker, Elizabeth Miller, from the Le Grand graduating class of 1935. Miller is the oldest living graduate of Le Grand High School.
Miller spoke about the family ranch, Kahl Ranch. It was established in 1860 on Mariposa Creek in Plainsburg District where her grandfather and father were born. She was born in 1917. They lived with her grandparents until 1921 when her family moved into a home designed by her mom, which came in pre-cut numbered pieces to Planada on the Santa Fe Rail Road.
