Pastor's Commentary: Deep calleth unto deep
By Pastor John Parker
ChristChurch
"Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts..." (Psalm 42:7)
Standing at the edge of the Pacific Ocean upon the high rocks in the night you can hear the very sounds the psalmist is writing about. "The noise of thy waterspouts."
It's that hollow noise of swirling suction among the deep rocks after the waves have collided and begin to recede in a swirling fervor. The bass notes of the sea are felt through the rocks as they vibrate into the depths of your soul more deeply than your human ears can hear! Thunderous! Majestic! Awesome!
"Deep calls unto deep!" And now the echo is heard a thousand years later. Jesus has risen! Pentecost has come! The Holy Spirit of God has entered into the temple-hearts of the believers! The deep sounds are heard even deeper now!
Deep cries unto deep, not on the outside, but deep within the heart of the person born new in Christ Jesus. Can you hear the sounds? They are the ocean rumblings of God's Spirit calling unto our human spirits.
Paul, the chief of sinners---rocked like a drunken sailor on the solid highway to Damascus---and hears Jesus Christ's deep calling unto the depth of his own soul and he is forever radically changed.
Thankfully he wrote some things down. In the following passage he seeks to explain "the deep" to those who claim to believe---but still crave the shallow.
Paul writes: "As it is written: "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him" but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit.
"The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
"We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.
"The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man's judgment: "For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?" But we have the mind of Christ. " (1 Corinthians 2:916, NIV)
Christianity is the deepening sound of Spirit to spirit.
It is hearing and seeing what---"No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived."
It is seeking and perceiving---"what God has prepared for those who love him."
It is believing and receiving---"the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit."
God is rumbling into the deep parts of our beings these days. He is awakening our spirits, hearts, souls, minds, emotions---drawing our whole---deeper-than-we-know---beings unto his deep love. And our longing for his love deepens as we perceive that his love is the only love that can to reach the deep core of our beings!
How does that sound to you? Can you hear him? "Deep calleth unto deep!"
