CHOWCHILLA NEWS STAFF

Lakeview Trail at Eastman Lake will be temporarily closed until at least August 2010 to protect a pair of nesting bald eagles. Park rangers have posted closure signs on the trail at the Codorniz Recreation Area and Raymond Bridge trailheads.

Bald Eagles are protected under the Endangered and Threatened Species Act, Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. The Corps is committed to the preservation of endangered species to aid in the successful survival of species for future generations.

Since 1993, these resident bald eagles have produced 41 young, 36 of which have successfully survived to take flight. The pair are recognized to have one of the most consistently productive nests in California.

The eagles will be fledging their young this summer. Due to the popularity of the trail for recreation purposes, this may cause temporary inconveniences to park visitors. Bald eagles are sensitive to human activity and if they are disturbed, it could result in nest abandonment or their young offspring attempting to fly prior to fledging.

Eastman Lake staff apologizes for any inconvenience the closure will have on our visitors. The public can assist in the successful survival of these birds by complying with the closure.

In addition to the Lake View Trail closure, Eastman Lake at the Chowchilla River inlet channel is closed due to a quarantine restriction.

This restricted area begins at the "Keep Out" buoy line north of the Codorniz Boat launch ramp and extends up the Chowchilla River channel past Raymond Bridge.

For more information regarding the closures at Eastman Lake, please call 559-689-3255.

Office hours are Monday through Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
