Pastor's Commentary: Happy Feet
By Pastor John Parker
ChristChurch
Foot washing! It's a good thing to do and wash behind your ears too. Mama says so. Clean feet and socks are appreciated by those around us too.
A pedicure! It's a more vogue and luxurious way to get your feet washed and more. There's something about having your feet washed, rubbed, massaged, that's very renewing and relaxing. People pay good money for this kind of treatment!
You can save money and give yourself a pedicure. The first thing that popped up on the internet when I did a search for pedicure was "Do-it-Yourself Pedicures -- How to Give Yourself a Pedicure" so it must be popular but certainly not as luxurious as when someone else does it for you.
Parents wash their infants' and toddlers' little feet. I still remember the joy of washing my children's soft little feet and toes when they were tiny! How awesome are precious those memories that wiggled by way too fast!
But what about washing another adult's feet voluntarily? Have you ever done that?
Some of you have washed the feet of your sweetheart. That's a fast way to be liked even more!
As disciples of Jesus Christ some of you have washed the feet of your brothers or sisters at your church. That certainly has an impact on both the receiver and the washer!
Some have never washed another adult's feet. It's not a common thing in our modern world of showers, shoes, and socks!
Foot washing was common in Jesus' day. Most wore sandals or went barefoot and the roads were dirty and dusty. In nicer homes back then there was a place to bathe your feet as you entered into someone's home. If they had servants they would do it for you.
That's why his disciples were shocked and even put off when Jesus knelt down to wash their feet. Peter didn't like is at all. Jesus was his Lord. No way did he want his master washing his feet. But Jesus insisted and did it anyway.
"Jesus knew that the Father had put him in complete charge of everything, that he came from God and was on his way back to God. So he got up from the supper table, set aside his robe, and put on an apron. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the feet of the disciples, drying them with his apron." (John 13:3-5)
Jesus could serve others in such a lowly way because he knew
1. He had his father's blessing and authority: "that the Father had put him in complete charge of everything"
2. He knew where he came from: "he came from God"
3. He knew where he was going: "on his way back to God"
If you want to get things done in your life ask the Father to make it clear through his Word (the Bible) and his Holy Spirit that:
A.) You have his blessing and authorization to his will. (Read and Claim: Matthew 28:18-20; Ephesians 1:3)
B.) You know where you've come from. (Read and Claim: Psalm 139:13-18; Ephesians 2:11-13)
C.) You know where you are going. (Read and Claim: John 3:16)
Then you'll have power and authority to truly serve the Lord and others in his love. You may even wash some feet and surprise a few people---including yourself!
