Girls Basketball: Lady 'Dogs add two more wins

The Le Grand Lady 'Dogs traveled for both games this past week and came home with two more wins under their belts.

The Le Grand Union High School Varsity Basketball Lady Bulldogs played the Waterford Wildcats on Jan. 25. The 'Dogs started out scoring 11 points over Waterford's nine in the first quarter.

The second quarter, the Lady 'Dog defense held the Waterford Wildcats to only five points and gained eight of their own. Le Grand had the lead going into half time with 19 over Waterford's 14.

In the second half the Lady Bulldogs exploded on the Wildcats bringing in a total of 27 points over the 'Cats 12.

In the third quarter, the Bulldog defense held Waterford to only six points and gained 11.

The final quarter the defense again held Waterford to six points and gained 16 of their own for the 46-26 victory.

Bulldog Miranda Flores tallied up 16 points in the win. Cindy Wilson pulled in 14 points with Veronica Moreno contributing 12 points. Bulldog's Bertha Granados and Britney Sapien both chipped in with two points each.

Bulldog Wilson total 10 rebounds. Granados had eight rebounds. Moreno had seven rebounds with two assists. Flores added four rebounds and four assists. Sapien chipped in with four rebounds. Monica Manzo had three rebounds with one steal. Sonya Manzo had two rebounds with one assists and Maggie Mujica had one rebound in the win.

To end the week of play, the Lady Bulldogs traveled up the hill to play Mariposa.

The ride home was a good one for the Bulldogs with a 36-24 victory.

The Bulldogs outscored the Mariposa Grizzlies by one point in the first quarter, 11-10.

The Grizzlies came out with their claws in the second quarter and scored six points and held the Bulldogs to only two points.

Going in to halftime with Le Grand 13, Mariposa 16.

Coming back from halftime, the Bulldogs took the bite out of the Grizzlies and scored 13 points and held the Grizzlies to only one point.

The final quarter of the game put the 'Dogs adding 10 points and holding Mariposa to seven points for the 36-24 victory.

Bulldog Monica Manzo topped out with 11 points, and one rebounds. Moreno contributed nine points with six rebounds, two steals and two assists. Flores added five points on the board with two rebounds and three assists. Wilson contributed four points and nine rebounds. Sonya Manzo chipped in with three points and Sapien added two points from the free throw line.

The Lady Bulldogs will play again on Thursday, at home against Turlock Christian Senior High and on Feb. 8, at Denair High School. JV games start at 6 p.m. followed by varsity at 7:30 p.m.
