Members of the Chowchilla Lions Club invite the community to join them in saving lives by donating at their blood drive on Feb. 3. the drive will be held at the Chowchilla Fairgrounds Little Theater between the hours of 4 to 8 p.m. All donors will receive a free barbecue dinner.

"February is an important month for blood drives as we are challenged daily to keep up with the need. At this time of year, donations are often lower due to the flu season, which usage is high, because of weather related accidents," stated Chris Sorensen, Director of Community Relations and Development for Central California Blood Center. "We rely heavily on our existing donors, but must attract new donors to meet the ever-growing need for blood. Anyone who is healthy and meets the eligibility requirements is needed to give blood."

Blood donation takes less than one hour to complete. Donors must be in good general health, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be at least 17 years of age. Sixteen-year-olds may donate with written parental consent. Senior citizens are encouraged to donate, as there is no upper age limit. Donors can give blood every eight weeks. Photo ID and Social Security Number are required at donor registration.

The Central California Blood Center is the sole provider of blood and blood products for the 31 hospitals in Fresno, Tulare, Madera, Kings and Mariposa counties and must collect between 5,000 to 6,000 pints of blood a month to meet the needs of the Valley communities.

Chowchilla Union High School will also host a blood drive on Feb. 5, from 8 a.m. to noon. All donors will receive a free T-shirt, along with a variety of discounts from Valley businesses for dining, recreation, entertainment and services.
